Industry China''s solar venture in space. Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP or SSP), the concept of gathering solar power in space using solar power satellites (SPS) to send it back to Earth, may sound like science fiction, but it is getting closer to reality. China plans to build a 1km-wide solar array in the geostationary orbit about 36,000km above Earth.
Industry Under the proposed plan, buyers would take non-price factors into account when procuring solar equipment and adopt a more in-depth two-stage tendering system, the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) said on Monday (Sep 2). Industry Strong state support and huge private investment have made China''s solar industry a global powerhouse, but it faces new headwinds, from punitive tariffs abroad to a brutal price war at home.
Over recent decades, China has risen to a preeminent global position in both solar photovoltaic (PV) adoption and production, a feat underpinned by a suite of pivotal policy measures. With a burgeoning demand for PV systems on the horizon, there is an urgent need to reassess past policies and chart new directions.
According to statistics of the China Solar Thermal Alliance, by the end of 2021, the total installed capacity of global solar thermal power generation reached 6.8 GW, and the figure in China was 538 MW (only including power generation systems at or higher than the MW scale).
President Xi Jinping's announcement in 2020 of China's commitment to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 underscores the nation's determination to expand its solar PV capacity. However, the scarcity of land, particularly in developed regions, has emerged as a primary impediment to solar PV development.
To foster domestic PV technology, the central government introduced incentive policies and provided technical support. Between 2001 and 2005, China actively imported advanced international solar PV technology and offered special support through initiatives like the 863 Program and other key science and technology projects.
The National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, in their 2022 Implementation Plan on Promoting New Energy's High-Quality Development, set a target to reach a combined installed capacity of over 1.2 TW for wind and solar power by 2030.
Further contraction is inevitable unless demand is supported in the next few years. Fifteen years ago the Chinese government prevented its nascent solar manufacturing industry from contracting, in the face of similarly difficult circumstances, by supporting deployment within China.
